"The Traveller's Guide-Pocket Gazetteer of the United States"-Morse-1823-Leather

Description: Offered is the antique leather-bound book "The Traveller's Guide, or Pocket Gazetteer of the United States", written by Jedidiah and Richard Morse and published in 1823 by Nathan Whiting in New Haven. The book contains thousands of brief entries for cities, towns, villages, counties, lakes, rivers, and other places throughout the United States of the early 19th century. There is also an appendix with numerous tables of data (see photo #12). The book originally came with a map, but this is missing. This is a rare find; at the time of original listing I could only find one other copy for sale on eBay, from a few years later. The book is approx. 6" x 4" and contains 323 pages, including the appendix. It is in fair to good condition for a 200-year old book. The brown leather cover has moderate wear. The front is detached, but someone has taped it to the spine. The back is well-attached. Some of the gold lines on the spine are still present and partially shiny. Of course with the front cover detached there is complete cracking in the front but there is no cracking in the back. The white endpapers have browned considerably and are moderately soiled. A previous owner has written his name twice in the front. I see no missing or torn pages and all of the pages are well-attached to the binding. Some pages have "dog-eared" corners. They have browned considerably and have moderate to in some cases rather heavy foxing, although the text is readable. I see no writing in the book other than that already noted. I have a lot of experience with vintage and antique books but am not an expert so please let me know if my description is missing information and you have additional questions.
