Description: First published in 1934, this is a modern reprint of Basil Willey's THE SEVENTEENTH CENTURY BACKGROUND: THOUGHT OF THE AGE IN RELATION TO RELIGION & POETRY. This 318 page paperback has no date but was probably published in the 50s or 60s. From the back cover we read, "The seventeenth century witnessed the crucial conflict between the medieval point of view and the Renaissance mind, between the old faith and the new philosophy. In his famous study of this critical age when consequences have pervaded all subsequent history and resound even in our own day, Professor Willey relates the thought of the century to religion and poetry, and traces its influence in such figures as Bacon, Donne, Descartes, Milton, Hobbes, Locke, and Wordsworth." Some great info in this book in acceptable condition. First eight chapters have good bit of neat underlining. Light wear on cover edges. Old price sticker on inside front page. Main issue is that the spine is broken and the book lies flat. STILL some great reading about their thoughts and ideas!! Shipping and handling 3.90 Media Mail to US destinations.
