He was Member of Parliament for Edinburgh North and Leith between 2001 and 2015, and prior to that was Leader of Edinburgh Council. He has written widely on a range of legal and public policy issues. Jean McFadden is Visiting Lecturer in Law at the University of Strathclyde. Alongside her academic law career, she has served as a councillor since 1971 and was Leader of Glasgow City Council 1980-1986 and 1992-1994. She held the posts of Chairman of Mayfest 1983-97, City Treasurer 1986-92 and President of COSLA 1990-92. She was awarded the CBE in 1992.
