SimmonsISBN: 87312-010-8 (0873120108)Copyright: 1979 (by the author)Publisher: The Psychogenic Disease Publishing Company (Sacramento, California) [Note; I believe that this Company was the author's personal publishing venture. in effect, this book was self-published.]Pages: 316Paperback book. About 8.5 inches tall by about 5.5 inches wide. The following biographical sketch of the author is compiled from an online database of newspaper articles. Harold E. Simmons was educated at the University of Chicago. In 1954, he began working for the County of San Mateo, California, as superintendent of social service. He advocated for a number of progressive reforms in the welfare system. Even then, Simmons was already interested in the psychogenic aspects of malignant diseases as evidenced by a 1956 article about him in the Redwood City Tribune which was titled: "Can Emotions Be The Root of Cancer?" By the early 1960s, Simmons had become the Deputy Director of the California State Department of Social Services, joining the administration of Governor Edmund G. "Pat" Brown. It appears as if things became rocky for him in March 1971, when he became openly critical of Brown's successor, Ronald Reagan. The new Governor's "welfare reform plan" had proposed the total elimination of Simmons' staff of 152 employee assigned to "work training and employment". Simmons called Reagan's plan a "piecemeal approach". He observed: "Essentially the governor's proposals seek to save money and not people and inevitably will fail even in saving money because experience has shown that many of the recommendations are useless." Speaking before a mass rally (of 10,000) persons sponsored by the California State Employees Association (CSEA), Simmons accused the Reagan administration of seeking to "destroy career services in government" and "to introduce its own special form of a modernized spoils system which will allow substitution of political cronies for college faculty and state Civil Service employees". Perhaps it is not surprising that there are no further newspaper articles referring to Simmons as a state employee.Although the author may have been a firebrand in the political arena, the book I am selling appears to be scholarly with extensive references to the medical and psychological literature. The book is inscribed by the author to Berry Wicks. Bereth "Berry" Wicks (Beard) [1957 - 2015] was born in Sacramento and graduated from the California State University at Chico with a degree in agriculture. At the time of the inscription (1984), she was a research associate at UC Davis. She then worked at Colorado State University before moving to Newport Beach, California. Please see above for complete description of condition and for photos. Sold as is.
