LIKE NEW / FINE / MINT Virtually new, without faults or defects. The highest grade given to books, aside from BRAND NEW. NEAR FINE (NF) / NEAR MINT Excellent condition with few VERY minor “defects” such as faint signs of wear and/or rubbing. No markings of any sort. (i.e. ownership (“Ex Libris”) markings, underlining, notes, highlighting, book plates, etc… The binding should still be firm. VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+) Approaching NEAR FINE with the exception of a few more signs of wear or rubbing. No markings of any sort. (i.e. ownership (“Ex Libris”) markings, underlining, notes, highlighting, book plates, etc… The binding should still be firm. VERY GOOD (VG) A typical used book which is no longer fresh and crisp, but it is still complete and will have no major defects. Potential Defects Present: Book plates or other ownership (“Ex Libris”) marks. Few small scuff marks and/or scratches on cover, corners and/or edges may have a bit more wear. Cloth on boards slightly faded. Dust covers may have a few minor flaws such as a closed tear or minor chip or chipping or a price clipped front flap. The binding should still be fairly firm. If any major defects are present, they will be noted. GOOD (G) A well-worn, used book which still has all of its pages. The lowest grade given to collectable books. Potential Defects Present: Should have no more than one major defect such as a cracked hinge, or damp staining. If the cloth binding is torn or heavily faded it would cause the book to be graded as "good". If a dust jacket has major tears, heavy chipping, or tape repairs it should be graded as good. Any major defects will be noted. FAIR A heavily worn, used book. Several defects present. I will not normally buy or sell books in this condition, with the exception of VERY rare books. ** GENERAL EXAMPLES OF DEFECTS ** VERY MAJOR Water damage, binding breaks, underlining in text, large tears, pages missing, ex-library copies, mold or mildew damage. MAJOR Small tears, spine slant (roll), rip to the cloth or paper binding, hinge or joint of binding starting to separate. MINOR Fading of the cloth or paper binding, dust jacket scuffed or rubbed, light soiling, minor chipping on any edges. ALTERATIONS Book plates or other ownership (“Ex Libris”) markings book plates, gift inscriptions or a remainder mark on one of the edges of the text block, front flap of dust jacket is price clipped.
