Description: This is a rare promotional DVD from PBS. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. The disc contains the entire 90 minute concert. The disc is stamped with basic information and comes sealed in a plain jewel case. There is no insert or packaging. The quality is good, but not HD. Conceived by John Mauceri (Grammy, Tony, and two-time Emmy winner), this new work is a re-imagination of Tchaikovsky’s holiday favorite, The Nutcracker. Based off of E.T.A. Hoffman’s original story, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King. Alan Cumming picks up the story where the beloved ballet ends. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King answers the questions of who the Nutcracker is and what happened to the girl and the prince at the end of Act Two.. Music from Tchaikovsky’s tone poems, orchestral suites, as well as from The Nutcracker ballet help tell this great and complete tale. One that begins, as all great stories do, with, “once upon a time…” Cabaret Tony winner Alan Cumming is getting into the holiday spirit with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The special was recorded at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall in December 2019. Music from Tchaikovsky’s score for The Nutcracker ballet helps tell this cherished and expanded tale. Mauceri also provides commentary and additional context for the story’s long history. “It makes for a great tale, one that is both familiar and unknown,” says Mauceri. “Perhaps it can do what Hoffmann intended: encourage children to follow their dreams and never stop believing in the power of imagination and the possibility that we can all live together in raucous harmony and understanding.”
