About the Book:‘Perhaps the greatest contribution of this inspired work is to open the doors of our understanding to the marvelous reality that Christ and his gospel... have been had among men... from the days of Adam to this present hour.’’ So testified Elder Bruce R. McConkie in his keynote address at the Brigham Young University Religious Studies Center symposium on the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible. Also present at this symposium were nine other prominent Church scholars whose combined expertise covers a wide range of historical and doctrinal aspects of the gospel. Their in-depth study of the Joseph Smith Translation and related scriptures clarifies the Bible from Genesis to Revelation and shows how Joseph Smith restored many plain and precious truths to that holy book. This volume brings together those addresses, illuminating this inspired translation as perhaps no other book does. Robert L. Millet gives an overview of the Translation, explaining what it is and giving enlightening details into the circumstances and process of the translation. Following this overview, George A. Horton, Jr., leads the reader through Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. Offering guidance on the Old Testament historical and prophetic books are chapters by Monte S. Nyman. While the changes in these books are not extensive, he explains, the Prophet contributed greatly to our understanding of the workings of the Lord, the work of evil spirits, and the messages of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and other prophets. The poetic writings of the Old Testament are addressed by Joseph F. McConkie, who concludes that there can be no meaningful understanding of revelation without revelation. Moving into the New Testament, Robert L. Millet analyzes the synoptic Gospels, showing how Joseph Smith expanded their content without changing the intent or distinctive styles of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. In another chapter Robert L. Millet focuses on the static, unresponsive state of Judaism at the time of Jesus, as shown by the additions in the inspired translation. Drawing from the Book of Mormon, the Bible, and the Joseph Smith Translation, Robert A. Cloward and Keith W. Perkins discuss respectively the Sermon on the Mount and the Second Coming. The books Romans through Jude are addressed by Clyde J. Williams, who references the Joseph Smith Translation to clarify and answer questions about these often misunderstood books of the Bible. Completing the study of the Bible is Gerald N. Lund’s chapter on Revelation. Speaking of the Translation as a whole, Robert J. Matthews outlines its major doctrinal contributions. He also moderates the panel discussion, ‘‘The Joseph Smith Translation: Retrospect and Prospect.”’ To read the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible is to receive insight into the Prophet’s understanding of various scriptures, to gain knowledge about the gospel not found in other sources, and to discover clues as to the meaning and content of the Bible in its original form. To read The Joseph Smith Translation: The Restoration of Plain and Precious Things is to become more fully aware of the divinity of the restored gospel. Copyright © 2018-2024 TDM Inc.
