The Fight for Life (Paperback) by John Dixon Ritchie Wood -Great Read!

Description: The Fight for Life - The Medical Services in the Gallipoli Campaign 1915-16 by John Dixon and Ritchie Wood, Helion & Co., Warwick, UK, 2024, 342 pp., 6½” x 9¾”, softcover, black & white photographs, endnotes, maps, diagrams, charts, appendices, index; ISBN 978-1-804513-25-5; £29.95 / $49.95; distributed in the US by Casemate Publishers. It is refreshing to find a new Great War history that presents information not commonly known. This is especially so when it deals with a lesser-known aspect of an equally lesser-known campaign. The Fight for Life does just that. This well-written and comprehensively researched work describes in minute detail the many aspects -- as well as many trials and tribulations -- of the various Allied medical services during the ill-fated 1915 assault on the Turkish Gallipoli peninsula by Allied troops from Britain, France, and the original Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC).The military medical services were, for reasons their leaders could not control, ill-equipped and unprepared when thrust into the 11-month conflagration. Throughout the battle, resolute medics labored valiantly under challenging conditions while treating as many as 300,000 casualties. These included not only combat injuries but also those suffering from a variety of conditions resulting from the intemperate climate, inadequate water and other supplies, predatory insects, and overall unsanitary environment. And in the end, unfair official criticism overshadowed any gratitude extended to these heroic men and women. This fact-filled narrative reads almost like a textbook as it walks readers meticulously through the separate phases of the campaign and outlines the alternating successes and failures those in the multi-national medical services encountered. Numerous diagrams, maps, charts, and clear photographs effectively supplement the narrative. Of particular interest is the appendix that provides readers a fascinating glimpse into the opposing Turkish medical service in the "Çanakkale" battles. The Fight for Life - The Medical Services in the Gallipoli Campaign 1915-16 includes a comprehensive index and bibliography, a list of abbreviations, and the names of the hospital ships that served in the campaign. For anyone interested in this narrow but heretofore overlooked topic, it may well be the final word and, as such, is highly recommended.
