Konrad Kümmel was a German Catholic priest, papal domestic prelate, and well-known author of popular stories at the turn of the 20th century. He achieved national fame throughout the German-speaking world as an author of popular stories, mostly of religious, historical or church history content. They appeared in various anthologies and in the first half of the 20th century were part of the standard repertoire of Catholic public and parish libraries, but also of interdenominational libraries. Kümmel was awarded the honorary title of Papal House Prelate and Pope Leo XIII awarded him the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice medal in 1889. This set is 3 of the 4 volumes of Kummel's "The Ebb and Flow of Life" (volumes 2-4), a better-known anthology of stories. Collected, translated ("from the third and fourth German editions with the permission of the author"), and published by A Father of St. Bede Abbey, a Benedictine monastery in Peru, Illinois in 1917. These are first editions. Dimensions are 5-1/2" x 7-3/4" x roughly 1-1/2". They are ex-library copies, hardbound in bright blue buckram cloth. The covers have some fading and wear; they have property stickers on the inside front and cards and sleeves on the inside back, and library catalog numbers written in pen along the top edges. Titles are gilt-stamped on the covers and spines. The text blocks are solid with no markings found outside normal ones on the Table of Content pages. The flyleaf of each has "Lending Library" written on it in pencil. Volume 2's text block is separating from the spine and covers, but is still attached; Volumes 3 and 4 are solid. Volume 3's flyleaf page is embossed. The lower third of the spines have been coated with a slick black substance and have shelf numbers written on them in white pen.
