Description: The Divine Right of Kings by John Neville Figgis medieval kingship history Elton Click images to enlarge Description The Divine Right of Kings by John Neville Figgis introduction by G R Elton Pub. Harper & Row, 1965. 1st edition thus. Softback xxxviii, 350 pages An important & groundbreaking work, first published in 1896 but still relevant today. Figgis sets his analysis in medieval Europe, exploring how nobles would often elect fellows to act as king (lord of lords) and who were bound to the customary laws of the land. Charting a series of theocratic power struggles originating in the Holy Roman Empire, and the transformation from being a king of a people to being king over a land, and the eventual resolution of those power struggles (in England), Figgis gives a thorough account of the development of Divine Right as it came to be stated by James VI. A key work in the history of political thought, Figgis's book revived the subject of the divine right of kings after it had been effectively destroyed by Locke in the seventeenth century. It displays his astonishingly wide reading and his, at the time, ground-breaking method of stressing the importance of historical setting. Many of his propositions proved seminal and were further developed by others. Very good condition. Pictures sell! Auctiva offers Free Image Hosting and Editing.300+ Listing Templates!
