Description: This book starts with James Tolbert Burkett. One of our first records of James is found in Harmon's "Annuls of Tazewell Co., Virginia," Volume H, page 17. On this page it is recorded that "James Birkett and Susan Lavina Alder" were married October 16, 1856 in Tazewell Co., VA. These two people--my great grandfather and great grandmother--are the start of all the Burkett descendants found in this book. As best we can tell, James was one of five children--Jacob, Delila, Mary, James, and Peter. (James and Peter may have been twins because they are both listed as 30 years old in the 1860 Census of Tazewell Co., VA.) His father and mother were George and Jane Burkett but we know nothing else about them except the approximate years of birth (obtained from their ages given in the 1860 and 1870 Tazewell Co., VA., Censuses). Susan's parents were Peter and Mahala Alder (from the 1850 and 1860 Tazewell Co., VA., Censuses). James is also listed as a soldier in Company "I", 16th Virginia Calvery Roster, Confederate Army. (From "16th Virginia Calvery," compiled by Jack L. Dickinson, Copyright 1989, Published by H. E. Howard Inc., Lynchburg, VA.) We next find James and Susan in the 1860 Census of Tazewell Co., VA. with their first two children--"Mahala J. and Missouri C." And they also appear in the 1870 Census of Tazewell Co., VA. with their children Mahala, Missouri, Margaret Ann, Peter, and Erastus. The 1880 Census adds William Stewart, Martin Luther, and Alice. The last child--John Thomas-- was born in 1883 when his mother Susan was in her late forties. One child--James R. Burkett-- is unaccounted for. His birth is recorded in Tazewell Co. on August 29, 1864. His parents are listed as James and Susan Burkett. But he does not appear in the 1870 Census in James' family. We assume he died at an early age some time before 1870. He will be counted as the fifth child of James and Susan. (No further mention will be made of James R. Burkett in this book.) One chapter is dedicated to each of the families of the surviving ten children of James and Susan Burkett. Charts of the family are found at the end of each family's chapter. In addition to birth, death, and marriage dates, the current address and phone number of living descendants is also included. This, of course, depends on whether we were able to obtain that information. Please note that this information is always listed with the current spouse. If a person has been married more than once, his or her address and phone number will be listed-1n most cases-- after his present spouse. At the end of the book is a geographical listing of all persons for which we have an address. We've tried to be as accurate as possible but know we've made mistakes. Recording information over the phone and in you homes introduces the possibility for errors. In some cases we were able to send a printout for correction. When it was returned it helped a great deal. But in many cases we did not have time to send a printout or the printout was never returned so we had to use the original unedited information. Please forgive our errors. You will note that in a few cases we were unable to find any information about a family. This was usually because we could not locate any member of that family. In only a couple instances did people refuse to give us their family information. Also you will see families or individuals where the data is sketchy. If you know the whereabouts of someone in these families or can provide some of the family information please contact us. This book commits us forever to collecting information about the Burkett descendants. We will try our best to fulfill this commitment but we cannot do it without your help. As events happen, particularly in your immediate family, but also in the families of your siblings, please send us information on the event--births, deaths, and marriages. Hopefully this book will stimulate you to inquire more about your family and to record significant events for your children. S20D - E
