Description: The Crucifixion from a Missal of Pope Innocent VIII The Crucifixionby Giuliano AmadeiThis beautiful painting, made around 1490 just at the cusp of the Renaissance, was from a large missal created for Pope Innocent VIII. He used it while celebrating Mass in the Sistine Chapel. It depicts the defining moment or Christianity, when Christ gave his life for the salvation of the world. The missal would have been open to this image during the Mass preceding the Canon, the prayer spoken immediately before the holy sacrament of the Eucharist—the consecration of bread and wine that would literally become the body and blood of Christ. Virgin Mary, Saint John, and Mary Magdalene surround our Lord in the two scenes. Old Testament prophets, including King David with his lyre, are on either side. We hope you enjoy this. Devotional artwork in the home can help the hearts of those who see it. We usually don'toffer our vintage prints in 11x14", but this one is a high res file so it looks good large, and there is just so much detail in the print, we thought some people would like a bigger print.
