Description: This is the April, 1914 (Vol. 87, No. 6) issue of The Century, a 6.5"x10" softcover magazine paginated 813-968 (plus 76 pages of ads). Designated the "Modern Art Number" it was one of the earliest attempts in mainstream US journalism to come to grips with the modern art movement, one year after The Armory Show introduced cutting-edge European artists like Pablo Picasso and Paul Cezanne to an American audience. Titled "This Modern Age in Art" the 51-page section includes the following articles, several of which touch on the Armory Show's impact: Is Our Art Distinctly American? (John W. The magazine also includes several other articles and stories, including the first appearance of "The Dog Harvey" by Rudyard Kipling. The cover illustration is by George Inness and Howard Greeley, the color frontispiece by Frederic Frieseke. In acceptable, reading-only condition with detached, chipped and torn covers, heavy loss to the spine, insect damage (primarily marginal and/or superficial). Pages 69-76 are loose at the back.
