Description: An engraving by John Outrim of Edwin Landseer's painting, The Cavalier's Pets Printed circa 1880 for Landseer's Works, by Virtue & Co. 'THE two Blenheim spaniels here represented belonged to the late Mr. Vernon, at whose request the picture was undertaken. A rough sketch of the dogs was made during a visit of the artist to him at his residence in Pall Mall, but nothing further was done for some time. At last Mr. Vernon met Landseer one day in the street, and reminded him of his promise. Two days later the picture was sent in completed. This is often quoted as an instance of Landseer's power of working rapidly; for, hasty as the execution must have been, no one has yet been able to point out any want of care in the finish. The extremely natural and lifelike expressions of the heads are very striking. The picture was exhibited at the British Institution in 1845 as "King Charles' Spaniels:" it is now in the National Gallery, having been presented to the nation by R. Vernon, Esq., in 1847. It was first engraved by John Outrim in 1850, and afterwards by A. Lucas in 1875.' Binding had disintegrated, and plates were loose. Generally good condition, this plate has some discolouration. Includes the description page. Total page size - 35.8cm x 26cm This is a genuine antique not a cheap copy
