Salinger First book club edition with Salinger photo on the rear of the jacket Publisher and Year: Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1951-Edition: First printing of the book club edition, which is characterized by the presence of Salinger's photo on the rear panel, no price, and a statement of "book of the month" on the front flap. The reclusive author forced the publisher to remove his portrait within months of the first printing, which is why later issues are entirely blank on the rear panel or feature a list of ads instead.-Condition and Description: Publisher's black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine. The boards show minimal wear. There is an embossed ownership stamp on the second flyleaf. There is a tape repair for a tear on the title page (and visible on the back, which is the copyright page) and the bottom of the dedication page. The hinges and binding are tight. The text is free and clear of writing and underlining. The original dust jacket has several tape repairs on the underside. All discussed faults can be viewed in the pictures. The jacket has been placed in a removable brodart cover.-“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though.”― J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye-Inventory ID: 605 - 670 - 856
