Joseph Buhlmann was a renowned architectural illustrator who made significant contributions to the understanding and appreciation of Renaissance architecture. His meticulously crafted drawings and plans provided invaluable resources for architects, students, and enthusiasts alike. Buhlmann (born April 28, 1844 in Grosswangen, Canton Lucerne, Switzerland; died October 29, 1921 in Munich, Bavaria, German Reich) was a Swiss and German painter, architect, and university professor. Joseph Buhlmann moved to Munich in 1863 as a Swiss citizen and studied at the building school of the Academy of Fine Arts under Ludwig Lange until 1866. Afterwards, he undertook a study trip to Upper Italy and Florence with Emil Lange, the son of his teacher. In 1873, he initially took a position as a teacher at the Realschule in Lucerne. In 1875 he became an assistant for pictorial perspective and watercolor painting, and from 1876 a private lecturer for architectural drawing, watercolor painting, and interior decoration design at the Technical University of Munich. In 1878 he was appointed extraordinary professor, and in 1878 ordinary professor of architecture. From 1897 to 1919 he worked in Munich as a professor of architectural form, perspective, and interior decoration. He became a Bavarian citizen. Buhlmann was an honorary member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts, was awarded an honorary doctorate for his services to teaching and his scientific work, and was appointed Privy Councilor. In 1873, Joseph Buhlmann married Emma Stocker (1853-1882) in Switzerland. This marriage produced the sons Fritz Buhlmann (1874-1956, architect and municipal master builder in Munich) and Otto Buhlmann (1875-1951, chemist and entomologist in Munich), as well as the daughter Sophie (1876-1933, married Buchner, drawing teacher in Munich), who were all born in Lucerne. After the early death of his wife, he married Maria Lang (1860-1929) in 1883. Children from this marriage were the later architect and architectural historian Manfred Buhlmann (1885-1955) and Karl Buhlmann (1886). A daughter, Hortense, died in the year of her birth, 1888. Joseph Buhlmann died at the age of 77 and was buried in the Old North Cemetery in Munich, where his grave is preserved.
