Superb SGC 4 Pair 1931 W517 Paul Waner HOF #34 and RARE #NNO variation LOW POP!

Description: A terrific matched pair of cards from the classic large-format strip card set designated as 1931 W517. W517 is known for being a big step up in the attractiveness of the strip card, with excellent 'portraits' along with some players in action. The Babe Ruth portrait is very-highly sought by collectors. Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Paul 'Big Poison' Waner is featured on both of these hand-cut examples, in the portrait format. Card #34 in the set, Waner is one of just two in the set that was printed WITHOUT the card number on the front (Dazzy Vance is the other) as a variation. These #NNO cards are quite scarce. Very low population numbers on these (and the population numbers on the set itself are quite modest.) Both Waner cards here, were they to crossover to PSA in the same grades, would upgrade most of the W517 Master Sets on the PSA Registry, and the #NNO card would upgrade the #1 set (replacing a PSA 2). SGC has certified just 10 examples of the #NNO Waner, with just two at this grade level and two higher, SGC 5.5 and SGC 6.PSA has certified a mere 5 cards with only one higher than this at PSA 5 (One PSA 3 and 3 PSA 2) Card #34 is one of just two at this grade level in SGC. There are just 4 PSA 4. Sepia was the most-common color. Card #34 is the sepia version. The #NNO card is the black and white version. Research has indicated that the color variations were not intentional but most likely the result of more than one anonymous company being used to print the sheets of strip cards.
