Description: We are pleased to be offering a sharply-detailed, probably in the XF range, 1798 S-159 Draped Bust Large Cent. Brown, glossy, with its fair share of dings and pits, a bit of removed corrosion, etc. The reverse is NOT bent! OK, that's out of the way; as Mr. Monk would say, "Here's what happened": there was a pocket of gas trapped in the planchet, which exploded out the rim at 6:00 when struck by the reverse die, creating the crease and a clamshell effect that lasts the length of the crease. There is also a perceptible bend in the obverse, from the rim to the nose and across the bust. This is where the pocket of gas ended; if you were to peel the obverse at the clamshell, the peel would end there. The edge shows an abnormality in the upsetting device; it's as-struck as the metal flows over it edges. Neat coin! Shipping: $5.00
