Sterling Silver Spoon Ring - Walker & Hall / Golf Clubs - size 7 - 1933

Description: Ring Style: Standard band... Ring Size: 7 (will re-size to any size 6 1/2 to 8)... Width: 7/16"... Weight: 7.1 grams The Walker & Hall / Country Club pattern features two crossed golf clubs and a ball. (see photos) The 'q' date mark indicates the spoon was made in 1933. To get a 'balanced' ring with all hallmarks intact this ring was made from a 4 3/8" demitasse spoon Brief History of Walker & Hall The origins of Walker & Hall began with John Harrison, a metal worker who took out the first licence in Sheffield during 1843 to make electroplated pieces. He employed George Walker to learn electroplating while in Birmingham. Walker did this, but two years later he decided to leave John Harrison’s employ in order to start his own company. Walker & Hall was first established by George Walker in 1845, and in 1853, Henry Hall joined the business, and thus the company became Walker & Hall. Sheffield Crown Hallmark In 1773, Sheffield's silversmiths joined with those of Birmingham to petition Parliament for the establishment of Assay Offices in their respective cities. In spite of determined opposition by London silversmiths, an Act of Parliament was passed in March, just one month after the original petition was presented to Parliament, to allow Birmingham and Sheffield the right to assay silver. During the long negotiations in London, Boulton stayed at the Crown & Anchor Tavern in the Strand, where much of the business was transacted. Lots were drawn to determine which marks the offices would use. Sheffield won and chose the crown, while Birmingham took the anchor. British Lion Passant (Sterling) Hallmark On English silver, the lion passant (walking lion) is the symbol for sterling silver (925). Scottish silver before 1975, like gold, bears a thistle mark. A higher silver standard, Britannia silver (958.4) was required to be used for a short period at the end of the 17th century, bearing the figure of Britannia instead of the lion. Britannia silver is still legal, but has been seldom used since the reinstatement of the sterling standard in 1720. The lion passant was retained in the Hallmarking Act of 1975, but the Scottish thistle was changed to a rampant lion. The History of Spoon Rings Spoon rings are believed to have originated in England in the 1600's. The story is that servants that couldn't afford a 'real' wedding ring would steal a silver spoon from their master and have it crafted into a ring. For a poor person a stolen spoon was to best, and easiest, way to give the woman they loved a beautiful ring. As the practice spread more and more silverware 'went missing' but since spoons were usually monogrammed, and newlyweds on staff were known to all, it wasn't hard to find the culprit and what was left of the spoon. Many arrests were made from the 17th to the 19th century with offenses ranging from "stealing a silver spoon" to "larceny by a servant." Criminal records allowed historians to determine when spoon rings began. By the 19th century Spoon Ring popularity waned but then it took off again during the 60's and 70's. This time though it was as much about fashion as it was about love. It still works both ways though and when you combine the two...
