St. Barbara is patron of architects, artillerymen, prisoners, and invoked against lighting strikes. The unusual pairing of these two saints on this medal suggests its intended audience was the newly converted of the New World. During the Baroque era, St. Barbara was also invoked against pandemic and disease. Thus, she protected the native populations decimated by diseases brought by the European conquerers and, along with St. Joseph, the building of a new family of the faithful in the Americas.
