Order several and save!* "St. Elmo" by Augusta Jane Evans was a popular novel published in 1866 that became one of the most widely read books in the United States at the time, alongside the Bible, "The Pilgrim's Progress," and "Uncle Tom's Cabin". The novel was initially rejected by several New York publishers, but was eventually published by George Putnam after his mother read and loved the book. The novel's protagonist, Edna, is portrayed as a woman with strong intellectual ambitions, which are framed within the ideals of "true womanhood" of the 19th century. However, Edna's scholarly desires and drive for individual success are shown to "topple over this code of propriety" and reach new heights. The novel explores the uneasy relationship between female intellectualism and societal expectations for women at the time. By 1896, several new editions of "St. Elmo" had been published in the North, with some passages shortened or clarified to make the novel more accessible to Northern audiences. The novel's popularity was so great that it inspired the naming of numerous towns, hotels, and other entities after the book's title. Book Title: St. Elmo Author: Augusta J.
