Description: Azurite, Cuproadamite & Bayldonite on a Cerussite/Galena rich Matrix-Tsumeb Mine- Namibia Class: Combination Size Range: Miniature (4.5-7 cm) Size: 6 X 5.7 X 3.4 cm Weight: 118.00 grams Description: This large & beautiful Display Specimen from the Tsumeb Mine sports excellent coverage on all sides. What a wonderful combination piece featuring scores of small, perfectly terminated and crystalline Azurite crystals interspersed with rare Bayldonite and Cuproadamite gem crystals on a Cerussite rich, Galena impregnated matrix. Azurite: Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 Cuproadamite: (Zn,Cu)2AsO4OH ? (Zincolibethenite: CuZn(PO4)(OH)) ? Bayldonite: PbCu3(AsO4)2(OH)2 Cerussite: PbCO3 Galena: PbS I am calling this Cuproadamite instead of Zincolibethenite due to the lack of blue coloration in the crystals, (there is an on-going debate concerning this). My deductions are from Mindat. This wonderful specimen features a sulfate reduced Cerussite matrix rich with Galena. The Galena is not visible on the exterior of the matrix, excepting for areas of Galena crystal formations emerging from the sulfate reduced Cerussite matrix. Due to the sulfate deterioration, this specimen sports hundreds of holes which have been inhabited with gem crystals of Azurite, Cuproadamite and the very rare Bayldonite found in few locations world-wide. A great opportunity to add this feature display specimen to your Tsumeb Mine Collection. Tsumeb mine is so unique that its very creation is open to debate. Prevalent research has led to the theory that the Tsumeb Mine is the volcanic shaft of a super volcano that erupted 2 billion years ago. The eruption lasted for approx. 100,00 years. 1.5 BYA the dome collapsed filling the throat with sand. There are two aquifers that transect the shaft. The volcanic aquifers are laden with Gallium, sulfates, phosphates and the like creating the stage for crystal formation. Tsumeb is one of the most prolific and highly acclaimed mines in the world producing very high-quality mineral specimens that have been coveted in collections since it starting operating in 1907. Tsumeb Mine closed in 1996. All mineral specimens from Tsumeb are currently in private collections or museums. These stones are 2,000,000,000 years in the making!
