General Ratchford served in a number of units and is credited by many as being the first Confederate to be wounded in land battle. He apparently fought in more battles than any other soldier –north or south. This Confederate, who first served with the Bethel Regiment and later in Hood’s Texas Brigade, participated in many campaigns and went on to participate in most of the dramatic moments of the war. Serving in both the Army of Northern Virginia and the Army of Tennessee, he had a reputation as a solid, brave soldier. In addition to Rachford’s war insights he provides detailed sketches of many of the great Confederate leaders that he knew intimately. This book is a facsimile reproduction of the original 1909 book. It contains a two page acknowledgement, a 31 page preface by Dr. Hestir - which includes a chronology of the battles that General Ratchford participated in between 1861 and 1865 – and the facsimile 1909 memoir of General Ratchford.
