GMC DUKW ("D" - year 1942, "U" - utility, "K" - all-wheel drive, "W" - twin rear axles) was known as "duck" to US Army and Marine infantrymen. United States built 21,147 wheeled amphibious trucks during 1941-1945. This strange vehicle was used all around globe (Mediterranean, Europe, Russia, Pacific and Far East). DUKW was used for transportation of goods and troops over land and water. DUKW excelled at approaching and crossing beaches in amphibious warfare attacks. They are used to this day, either for training or in civilian uses. General Motors Corporation (GMC) built a six-wheel-drive amphibious modification of 2 and 1⁄2-ton CCKW truck used by U.S. military during World War II and Korean War (known as “Deuce and Half”). This allowed commonality with an already produced vehicle, using power plant, transmission, transfer case, drive shafts, axles and brake system, with easy maintenance. A steel sheet watertight hull was welded around chassis of DUKW, strengthened with reinforcements beams. Hull was rectangular, with a curved bow, sloped ends and a flat bottom. One-third of vehicle was occupied by engine. Transmission used a 10-forward speed, two-reverse gearbox. It used a duplex drive system, with a long transmission shaft acting a screw propeller housed in a tunnel at rear end of hull and steered by removable rudders. Vehicle maximum speed was 50 mph and could cruise at 5.5 knots (6.33 mph) up to 50 nautical miles (58 miles). Behind engine was open-top driver compartment. Last two-thirds of hull were occupied by a large utility cargo area. Usual payload was 2 1/2 tons over land or water. Versatile cargo compartment could be covered by a tarpaulin cover. Driver compartment was made of plywood with a windshield designed to withstand excessive vibrations. At driver’s left, a space could be used for a ring mount, holding a heavy machine-gun (0.5 caliper/12.7 mm). Solido tanks are aptly named, as they are truly “solid” with very heavy die-cast metal bodies. They are quite detailed and the quality is fabulous! Please note that typically, Solido tanks and armored fighting vehicles are made in a 1:50 scale while the support vehicles, which include the jeeps and staff cars, are produced in a slightly larger 1:43 scale. Also, Solido military and fire fighting models are built so well that over 55 years later they are as good as they were when they were built and first sold. Truly this is quite remarkable! Solido die-cast models require no gluing or painting. Each model is an instant display piece or diorama centerpiece straight from box. Made from die-cast metal, die-cast military vehicles from Solido are 100% true to scale! Solido military tanks have following features.· Heavy die-cast metal construction that has with some plastic components (e.g., antennas).· Rotating turret, elevating cannon, & accurate hull in die-cast metal.· Accurate moving metal tracks on detailed rotating wheels.· Realistic panel lines, access panels, and surface details located at hull. · Pad printed markings and placards that will not fade or peel like decals =================================================================================Please leave positive feedback.
