Description: Solid Silver Vesta Match Safe Case K530/1 No Monogram - Pat Nov 29-1904. Made in New York by ART MFG CO Weighs 32.2 grams. It is marked inside along the upper edge with PAT ART MFG CO PATENT RE NOV 29-1904 on the left panel, and HALLMARK STERLING and K530/1 on the inside upper edge of the right panel. The original patent was issued January 1904 to Harold Dodge - it was the first matchbook holder invention patent. Dodge applied for a reissue which was granted 29- November of the same year. ART MFG - the first letter of each of the last names (Mark Anthony, Samuel Robert and Henry Traute). Traute is credited with marketing that made matchbooks so popular. ART MFG made high quality items for Tiffany, Gorham and others. This antique sterling silver matchbook is in nice pre-owned condition, with normal signs of use, as shown - it closes firmly and opens properly, but will need to be polished. It has an area on the front for a monogram, but this piece has not been monogrammed. It also has a loop to attach it to a chain. A wonderful gift for an antique silver collector or matchbook collector.
