He worked as a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle before jumping into the novel writing game. His best known work was his last novel ‘Build My Gallows High’, which he later adapted into a screenplay for the film version titled ‘Out Of The Past’, directed by Jacques Tourneur and starring Robert Mitchum + Kirk Douglas. Mainwaring continued writing screenplays for the next 10 -15 years (including the original ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers), and then moved into TV work for another decade prior to his passing.
