Hostilius Saserna Solid Silver Coin Obverse showing the head of Vercingetorix right, Gallic shield behind; Reverse depicting two warriors in biga, one driving and the other brandishing spear, L HOSTILIVS above, SASERN below. Weight: ~ 3.6 gramDiameter: ~ 21 mm Vercingetorix was a king and chieftain of the Arverni tribe (modern day Auvergne in France), where he is still considered a folk hero. He united the Gauls in a revolt against Roman forces during the last phase of Julius Caesar’s Gallic Wars. Vercingetorix was the son of Celtillus the Arvernian, leader of the Gallic tribes. He came to power after his formal designation as chieftain of the powerful Arverni at the oppidum (fortified settlement) of Gergovia in 52 BC. He immediately established an alliance with other Gallic tribes, took command and combined all forces, leading them in the Celts” most significant revolt against Roman power. He won the Battle of Gergovia against Julius Caesar in which several thousand Romans and allies died and Caesar’s Roman legions were forced to withdraw. However, Vorcingetorix was too late to unite the Gaulish tribes and at the Battle of Alesia, the Romans besieged and defeated his forces. In order to save as many of his men as possible, he apparently gave himself up to the Romans and was held prisoner for five years. In 46 BC, as part of Caesar’s triumphal celebrations, Vercingetorix was paraded through the streets of Rome and then executed. Vercingetorix is primarily known to history through Caesar’s ‘Commentaries on the Gallic War’.The head on this famous coin has long been identified as that of Vercingetorix, the defeated Gallic leader who graced Caesar’s triumph in Rome. This can not be proven but the head does have remarkably individualistic and natural features, and it must surely represent an actual Gaulish captive seen by the die engraver. The gens Hostilia was an ancient family at Rome, which traced its origin to the time of Romulus. The most famous member of the gens was Tullus Hostilius, the third King of Rome; however, all of the Hostilii known from the time of the Republic were plebeians. Several of the Hostilii were distinguished during Punic Wars. The denarius was the standard Roman silver coin, and was the most commonly used denomination in the Roman world. The term denarius literally means, in Latin, "containing ten asses", and was so called because originally the denarius coin was the equivalent of 10 asses. The denarius was a symbol not only of trade and commerce, but also of Roman power and status. The legacy of the denarius makes it the most popular coin amongst both casual hobbyists and more serious Roman coin collectors alike. The images on the Roman coins give us a lot of information about the Romans and their culture. For example images of sacred and important buildings and temples, show us what their buildings looked like thousands of years ago. Coins were not just money, but propaganda or a means of communicating civic pride. Coins are valuable, durable and pass through many hands. Without newspapers or other mass media, they were an ideal way of spreading a political message.
