S-51 - civil modification of the helicopter. Built by Sikorsky Aero Engineering Corporation. The H-5/S-51 first flew on 16 February 1946. This helicopter was for the first time equipped with an autopilot, which greatly facilitated control. A total of 379 H-5/S-51 helicopters were built. The machine was widely used in the armed forces of the United States and a number of other states.The H-5 helicopter (internal designation of the developer R-5) was designed as a machine with improved characteristics (load capacity, speed, ceiling) to replace the Sikorsky R-4. The main rotor diameter was increased, the fuselage was lengthened, the pilot and passenger seats were arranged in tandem. A more powerful 450 hp engine was installed. The first flight was made in August 1943. The US Army ordered 26 test vehicles (under the designation YR-5A), the first deliveries began in February 1945. This was followed by an order for one hundred helicopters (modified to transport the wounded on stretchers), of which it was released and delivered 34 cars.A year later, in February 1946, a modified version of the YR-5A, or S-51 with improved performance, made its first flight. The cockpit was enlarged and accommodated the pilot and three passengers. Eleven of these machines (designation R-5F) were purchased by the US Air Force, ninety by the fleet (designation HO3S-1). The helicopters were operated by the US military until 1957.
