Mary Ellen Mark, (born March 20, 1940, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.—died May 25, 2015, New York City, New York), American photojournalist whose compelling empathetic images, mostly in black and white, document the lives of marginalized people in the United States and other countries. Mark’s work appeared in Time, Vanity Fair, Paris Match, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and Stern. She received numerous honors, including a Guggenheim fellowship (1994) and three grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (1977, 1980, 1990).
