Description: Shelley Footed Cup & Saucer Hunter Green Henley Shape Gold Scrollwork 1938-1966 Shelley Footed Cup & Saucer 1938-1966 Hunter Green Henley Shape Gold Scrollwork A beautiful SHELLEY Footed Scalloped CUP & SAUCER Striking rich HUNTER GREEN pattern in the HENLEY shape, Circa 1938-1966 from Fenton, Staffordshire, England The Shelley name has been associated with pottery from as far back as the potter, Randle Shelley, who lived from 1706-1781. The history of Shelley China begins about 1860 when Henry Wileman (owner of the Foley Works) built a second pottery in Staffordshire, England for the purpose of producing fine china. Joseph Shelley joined him as a traveler (salesperson) in 1862 and later became a partner eventually taking charge of the china production. Under the 50 year leadership of Percy Shelley (Joseph’s son), the company continuously improved china quality and built the foreign export business. The name officially changed from Wileman & Company to Shelley Potteries in 1925 after ensuing legal battles begun in 1910 with other potteries using the region’s name of Foley. The peak of the production was in the 1950’s and, due to modernization and the formation of conglomerates, Shelley’s more expensive bone china lost market share resulting in the sale of the company in 1966 to Allied Potteries. All of Shelley’s facilities are now gone. This superb quality china has color that is bright and vivid on the high white background. This is painted on a blank of fine white bone china with gold trim on the edges. The Henley shape cup and saucer are tied together by the use of the same solid Hunter Green on both. The cup has a gold scrollwork band on the top of the inside and on the foot. The saucer has a diameter of 5 11/16" & its height is 3/4". While this saucer is classified as used, we can find no rubbing. When viewed with a magnifying glass there is slight utensil wear to the green probably caused by the handle of a teaspoon laying on the saucer over the years. Otherwise, there appears to be absolutely no wear to the vivid color and no crazing. There are no chips, nicks, or repairs to this stunning saucer. The gold around the edge of the saucer also has slight wear caused by the teaspoon handle. The stand was used as a photo prop and is not included in this listing. The cup which has a diameter of 3 5/8" and a height of 2 3/8" shows no damage and pings delightfully when tapped. We see absolutely no wear to the cup. The Shelley mark on both is identified as used in the 1938-1966 time period. The Henley shape was produced from 1938-1964. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description. The stand was used as a photo prop and is not part of this listing.
