Description: Sharply Formed Green Andradite Garnet Crystal with Color Zoned Edges #33 Locality: Sibinndi, Daikon Kayes Region, Mali Size: 1.8 x 1.8 x 1.5 centimeters - Notes - - Beautiful quality!! - This garnet has unique light green bands at all of the edges and is zoned to green at the center of each face - This is andradite garnet. Sometimes garnets from this locality are referred to by the colloquial term “ugrandite” – a mix of andradite, uvarovite, and grossular varieties (all of which can be green in color). A more correct mineralogical name is Grandite (meaning garnets that are somewhere in the middle along the andradite-grossular solid solution series). The green garnets from this locality vary in composition with respect to Iron and Aluminum in their molecular structure. Iron is the Andradite side, and Aluminum is the Grossular side of the series. It could be that some Chromium was found in testing of some particular specimen, and hence lending to Uvarovite garnet in the trade-name reference.
