Description: Set of three Antique Bedouin silver bracelets known as “asawir” dated from at least pre 1950 or earlier. Bedouin silver has often been remelted several times and small contributions of metals other than silver may have been added. Women’s jewelry represents her personal wealth to dispose of by trading and is often melted down upon her death to be remade for daughters. The birth of a son can also be the source of a gift. Bracelets would be worn on the wrist and ankles. You will note the internal diameter of the bracelets represents a very small or slight sized wrist, but the bracelets are very heavy. The women can easily wear silver head bands, necklaces and belts in addition to the bracelets. Nose ring and ear rings are often added. Heather Ross who studied/collection Saudi jewelry suggests in her book that the heavyweight worn by rather small women indicates the strength they have gained by their living environment and doing the heavy work of desert life. The first five smaller photos probably represent a partial casting technique of a cast band which represents heavy granulation clustered onto the band by the silversmith. This style has a heavy use of silver and thus much weight. 101.9 grams or 3.55 oz.The second set of 3 photos represents the technique of wire & wrought metal. The wrought metal is worked into shape by twisting or bending and made malleable by annealing heat. These are twisted in a”Celtic style” often seen in Central Arabia. They are decorated with plaited wire. 153.1 grams or 5.395 oz.The last set of photos displays fusing and soldering techniques. High heat and flux is used to join individual components. This particular bracelet displays small detailed granulation plus much larger silver drops and then accented with larger heavy formed silver balls with medium rings of dropped silver in a flower like base. Plaited wire is used near the pointed ends which have been chased with markings. This bracelet demonstrates the historical Oriental influence. The ancient trade routes influence shows well in the designs of the Bedouin jewelry. 124.9 grams or 4.400 oz.Please carefully examine the photos to ensure these items meet your standards.Shipped only within the US via USPS Priority Small Box.
