Description: Sequoiadendron giganteum is a tree in the Cupressaceae family. They are commonly known as giant sequoia, redwood, Sierra redwood, Sierran redwood, Wellingtonia, or Big Tree. Big Tree was a nickname used by John Muir. This is the only species in the genus Sequoiadendron. They are the largest trees on earth. The oldest known species is over 3,200 years old. The tallest recorded are over 300 feet tall, with a trunk 56 feet in diameter. The cones can stay green and closed for more than 20 years. It grows in full sun to partial shade. Zones 6-9 Germination Mix seeds and moistened soil together in a ziplock bag. Write the name on the bag. Place in the refrigerator for 30 days. Soak seeds for 12 hours. Sow seeds 1/4" deep into a well-drained, sandy compost and cover seeds with sand or grit. Place the seed tray in bright light and keep moist. Seeds germinate in 10-21 days.
