Description: Seong Moy (1921-2013) was a Chinese-American painter and printmaker noted for his colorful and expressive artworks. He was born in Canton, China in 1921 and came to the USA at the age of 10. As a young man, he studied at the WPA Federal Art Project School in Minnesota and the St. Paul School of Art and the WPA Graphic Workshop in Minneapolis. He later was enrolled at the Art Students League of New York, the Hans Hofmann School of Art (N.Y) and Atelier #17 (N.Y.) In 1942 he enlisted and served as a U.S. Air Force photographer in the China-Burma war. He later became a successful painter, printmaker and book illustrator. He had a great reputation as a teacher and art instructor at several institutions including the City College of N.Y., the Art Student's League, the Pratt Contemporary Art Center, Indiana University and the University of Minnesota. His artworks can be found in many important collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in N.Y.; the Museum of Modern Art (N.Y.); the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Brooklyn Museum; the Library of Congress; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Smithsonian Institute. The artwork for sale is a vibrant, colorful, original woodcut that is entitled in pencil "Two Circus Acts in One" (photo 4). It is signed and dated in pencil at the lower right "S.Moy -53'" (photo 2). The color woodcut on thin tissue paper has the edition number "67/200" written in pencil in the lower center margin (photo 3). The print measures 15 and 1/2" high and 19" across. Photo 9 shows the ink bleedthrough to the other side of the print (something most collectors like to see). It is a classic example of the style of the artist who often captured brilliant colors and sensations of movement in his artwork. The image shows circus tightrope walkers doing their act together.
