Paperweight measures 3 3/8 inches diameter and 1/2 inches tall ( 1 ) In 1974 the Wittnauer Mint of New Rochelle, New York (“Makers of Fine Medallic Art”), produced a beautiful silver medal honoring Churchill Downs and the 100th anniversary of the Derby. The medal was designed by artist Marcel Jovine, who was noted for his equestrian sculptures and later designed coins for the United States Mint. It’s crafted of sterling silver with a gold overlay, and weighs 1.25 avoirdupois ounces. The medal’s rim notes its composition of gold on sterling silver. Signed document from Joe Dombroski as follows: My name is Joe Dombroski and I was a photographer for NEWSDAY in NY from 1966 to 2001 and during that time in 1973 I was assigned to cover the Belmont Statkes in Queens NY which was won by SECRETARIAT as he captured the triple Crown of horse racing. ( see photo of me on stand and camera mounted on ground during the start of the race) I was worked with reporter Bill Nack, who later on went on to write the book SECRETARIAT which later was a movie. During his writing and interviewing Penny Chenery he was able to get several dozen autographs for me on my photo of SECRETARIART. On the same photo, Ron Turcotte, the jockey, also signed for me.
