Description: 10c 1847 (Scott 2), large margins on three sides and along left frameline, tied by unusual red circular criss-cross grid cancel, matching "Boston & Albany R.R. Apr. 23" (Towle No. 53-B-1) route agent's circular datestamp and "Paid" handstamp on blue folded cover to the Superintendent and Engineer of the Central Michigan Railroad in Detroit, light central vertical file fold well clear of stamp This cover was carried on Routes 605 and 476 to Albany via Buffalo and Cleveland to Detroit. Scarce railroad marking on a 10c 1847 stamp. There is a pencil note on the reverse that this cover sold in a 2009 auction for $2,300 ($2,000 hammer plus 15% buyer's premium). Accompanied by copy of page from PF's book showing the cover has a genuine certificate. When the PF issues certificates, it makes two photos. One goes on the certificate and the other into a book housed on the bookshelves of the venerated expert committee for the issue with the opinion noted under the photograph. The handwriting is that of Peter A. Robertson, former curator of the PF and a good friend with whom I worked from 1995-1997 and one of my mentors. Unfortunately, only an average bridge player (LOL Pete!) Per wikipedia, the Michigan Central Railroad was originally incorporated in 1846 to establish rail service between Detroit and St. Joseph Michigan. The railroad later operated in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois and Ontario Canada. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ BUY WITH CONFIDENCEI am a true professional philatelist, doing this for a living since 1995.
