Description: This listing is for an original copy of Asiatic Researches that you see in the photos. I purchased it from a book dealer. I have not been able to find another one (other than reprints) online so I am guessing that it is scarce if not rare. The title page reads: Asiatic Researches; or, Transactions of the Society Instituded in Bengal, for inquiring into the History of Antiquities, the Arts, Sciences, and Literature, of Asia. Volume the Eighth. Printed Verbatim from the Calcutta Edition. London: Printed for Vernor, Hood, and Sharped; Cuthell and Martin; J. Walker; Lackington, Allen, and Co., Otridge and Son, Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme; R. Faulder; Scarcherd and Letterman; R. Lea; J. Mawman; J. Asperne; Black, Parry, and Kingsbury; and E. Lloyd; At the Union Printing-Office, St. John's Square, by W. Wilson. 1808 . Including the spine, the covers measure close to 5 1/2 by 8 1/2 inches. The pages are numbered up to page 538. There are three foldouts. One has two tables illustration different types and duration of fevers of fevers. One is a map that is titled: "A Sketch of the Triangles from which the Meridional & Perpendicular Arcs have been derived. The third is a Table of the Hindu Historical Periods. The title page is signed and dated 1808. I have not been able to decipher the name. There is also a stamp on the title page dated 1891 indicating that it was in the U.S. Naval Observatory Library. There is also a U.S. Naval Observatory bookplate and a W.W. Atkinson Burton in Kendal bookplate. Near those bookplates there is a "Surplus Duplicate" stamp. Another stamp dated 1960 indicates that it was a duplicate. I think is probably when it was sold. There are a few illustrations. Most of the book is in English. One section is titled "Extracts from The Tehzeeb Ul Mantik" That section has pages printed in what I am guessing to be Arabic facing the pages printed in English. That section is 43 pages long. The condition is much like you see it in the photos. As far as I can tell, it is complete. There are no loose pages. Someone has attached a sticker with the title printed on it on the front cover. There is wear to the covers and spine that you can see in the photos. There is dark foxing inside the front and back covers at the corners and to a lesser degree on their facing pages. There is some moderate and variable toning of the pages from age. I have not found any stains or writing or marks in the text. There are a multitude of tiny dark spots on the page opposite one of the folded tables and on the table itself. There are some old repairs made with some kind of tape holding some parts in place that you can see in the photos. There is a crack that runs the length of the spine. With the repairs the book feels solid and not likely to fall apart. There are a few very minor and tiny tears. There are some creased folds in the two last blank pages. When my weak nose is close to it, it smells lightly like an old book. I do not detect any smoke. Otherwise, this book is generally fine and as shown. My photos should give you a good idea of its general condition. I guarantee this book to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description; please look at all of them. I allow three business days for shipping, but I usually ship the same or next day if possible. Please note that the lighting in my photos is uneven, and there might be shadows or reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors; different monitors may show different colors. I often say that an item measures or weighs "approximately" because no measurements are exact, and some things are difficult to measure. I like to leave feedback after I know that the item has arrived and that the buyer is satisfied. I reserve the right to cancel any bids without explanation. I frequently purchase signature delivery for my more valuable packages because of the possibility of them being stolen off of a porch or damaged by weather. I often, but not always, ship the same or next day. Often, I have a double-walled box custom made for larger items, which might result in a short delay. When I use packing peanuts, they are usually made from biodegradable materials. Please email me with any questions or suggestions. I do not ship on weekends, and I might not be available to answer emails on weekends.
