SARAH BERNHARDT - AUTOGRAPH NOTE SIGNED 1904 - HFSID 41491 SARAH BERNHARDT Gray bordered note in French from the actress dated 1904 Autograph Note Signed: In French, translated in part, "[First two words difficult to decipher]Compliments and my thanks [remainder difficult to decipher]/ Sarah Bernhardt/ 1904", 5x3. French stage star Sarah Bernhardt (1844-1923), born Henriette Rosine Bernard, who was noted for her remarkable voice, emotional acting and unconventional personal life, began her career in 1862 in comic theater and burlesque, and by the 1870s, she was appearing on stages all over Europe. Bernhardt later made her film debut in Hamlet's Duel (1900), and, although she said she detested the medium, made another film, Tosca, in 1908. Even though she was horrified when she saw the finished production and demanded that the negative be destroyed, Bernhardt later appeared in La Dame aux Camelia (1911) and Queen Elizabeth, the 1912 film that provided the revenue to enable Adolph Zukor to establish Paramount Studios. Bernhardt's eccentricities - she slept in a coffin to prepare for tragic roles and kept a champagne-sipping alligator - anticipated later generations of quirky celebrity behavior. Crease on left margin. Corners and edges slightly worn. Toned. Faint stains throughout. Adhesive residue on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
