An 8-time .300 hitter, Sam, who was an American League All-Star outfielder four seasons, batted a career .299 - just one point shy of the coveted .300 mark. Other recognized high MLB achievements including 1,000 runs scored, 2,000 base hits, 400 doubles, 100 triples and 1,000 were numbers Sam West approached - falling a bit short in most cases with 1,838 hits, 934 runs, 347 doubles, 101 triples and 838 RBI. A man of great bat control, West walked 696 times while striking out just 540. Sam West's best years for average were: 1934 (.326), 1930 & 1937 (.328) and 1931 (.333). His four All-Star selections were: 1933, 1934, 1935 and 1937 while he received American League MVP votes in 1931, 1933, 1934 and 1936.Defensively, in his day, West was without peer - as evidenced by his league leaderships as a center fielder in assists (3 years including a career high of 24 in 1929), double plays (4 seasons), putouts and fielding average (twice each).
