[ref: Clark v. 1, page 46] "This edition, the first to be issued in San Francisco, was published by Warren E. Price. He went to New York in 1901, and it is of curious interest to note that his successor in business was one Robert Ross" An advert for W 'E Price included with this copy (p. [72]) Advert shows a printer's slug "J. A. Ephraim San Francisco 1896" confirming for our copy the place and date.DATE: 1896 DESCRIPTION: 12mo. 6" x 4.75" 71, [1] pages, 10 unnumbered leaves of plates : illustrations ; 15 cm. List of illustrations on front fly page. BINDING: White glazed pictorial wrappers, perished from the present copy. Metal stitched (what Clark refers to as "wired"). .NOTE ON COVERS and TITLE: We deduced the title bibliographically, since it was printed on the covers which are missing from this copy. Covers were weak on all copies: Huntington Library's copy and Oxford's copy both have detached covers. The Huntington copy has a repair to the back cover which obscures the advert leaf (resulting in a questionable publisher attribution in their catalog: "The Paper Covered Book Store" is not a regular publisher that we've found, and Clark [Cowan] never considered it a true publisher). .NOTE ON COLLATION: This copy, and both copies we examined at Huntington and Oxford, have a preliminary leaf on color paper, noted without detailed description in Clark. "List of The Pictures by Aubrey Beardsley" in decorative border, one leaf, verso blank. That leaf is printed on pink paper in both Huntington and Oxford examples. This copy, as can be seen in the photos, is more of a buff color. Or maybe that's heavily faded and toned from an original bright pink. Either version is possible and, as stated, Clark is no help here as they don't mention color of that preliminary leaf. . Listing and template services provided by inkFrog
