Description: Alpaca knife - FULL PATINA - Different and Special (belonged to Rosas Y Belgrano family) "Industria Argentina" Belonged to my grandfather in Argentina. These knives were the symbol of the gauchos: they were used both as a defensive weapon in times of combat, but also as a tool in everyday life. They were the ideal utensil for all their daily chores, from eating to butchering animals. This one is a Facón. Items with a gray metallic finish, not quite as shiny as sterling silver, are often found marked alpaca. This type of alloy, indicates a metal that contains copper, zinc, and nickel along with tin. The Facon can trace its roots back to the 14th century where it was widely used and carried by just about everyone, from peasant and serf all the way up to the landed nobility. In fact, it was so popular it jumped the Atlantic Ocean with the first European immigrants and became established through out North and South America.
