Description: British Parliament 1925 Vintage Lithograph Roman Ships Serve as a Models for French Maritime History and the Beginning of the French Navy A 1934 Page of French Navy Historical Illustrations(Text in French) Ship designs of the Phoenician, Carthaginian, Greek and Roman civilizations would have served as inspirations for the first French ships and the eventual French Navy.Marseilles is the oldest town in France, settled by seafaring Phocaean Greeks from Asia Minor c.600 B.C. Known as Massilia, it became an ally of Rome. ___ This page of history has four engravings of Roman ships (drawings by L. Haffner) that very likely served as models for the beginning of French maritime history:- "CATASCOPISCUS”, ROMANS’ SCREENING SHIP, FIGURED ON THE MOSAIC OF ALTHIBURUS (TUNISIA). - "ACTUARIA", ROMAN SHIP OF THE LINE, FIGURED ON THE MOSAIC OF ALTHIBURUS. - “CORBITO”, ROMANS CARGO SHIP, FIGURED ON THE ALTHIBURUS MOSAIC. -“HIPPAGO”, ROMAN HORSE TRANSPORT, FIGURED ON THE ALTHIBURUS MOSAIC. --- Founded in the 17th century, the French (Military) Navy is one of the oldest navies still in continuous service, with precursors dating back to the Middle Ages. But the first French ships came much, much earlier, based heavily on the ships that sailed the Mediterranean. Since the year 118 BCE, the Romans were established in Gaul, at Narbo on the Atas, which gave its name to Narbonne Gaul (today comprising modern-day France and parts of Belgium, western Germany, and northern Italy). One origin of the French Navy was in the Mediterranean Sea, where the Ordre de Saint-Jean de Jérusalem had its own navy, the Levant Fleet, whose principal ports were Fréjus, Marseille, and Toulon. The Ordre, which was both a religious and military order, recruited knights from the families of French nobility. In 1895, in a Roman villa near the ancient city of Althiburus (in present-day Tunisia), a mosaic was found on which numerous ships are depicted and named. The ships depicted on the mosaic clearly only serve to distinguish between the various types of ships. The Althiburus mosaic is dated to the 3rd century AD and shows an almost scientific nautical knowledge in the form of 25 images of boats schematized to the extreme with corresponding names in Latin or Greek. The French historian and archaeologist Paul-Marie Duval numbered and described the vessels. Prior to this, virtually all prints (and engravings) were produced as illustrations to be included in a manuscript, book, newspaper, or pamphlet. Therefore, a vast majority of original prints have been over the years removed from these original sources. Prints are produced using many different techniques: relief printing (woodcut & wood engraving), intaglio printing (steel & copper plate engraving, drypoint, aquatint, etc), and planographic printing (lithography, serigraphy, inkjet, laser, etc.). While the commercial value of a print depends on such factors as age, rarity, and condition, the real value of a print is its tie to its history and/or its esthetic beauty.
