DescriptionPorcelain plate with overglaze transfer-print by Robert Mapplethorpe.Robert Mapplethorpe (1946-1989) was a controversial photographer known for his large-scale, stylized black and white images.Whether of celebrities, nudes, self-portraits, BDSM scenes, or flowers, he treated all his subjects in the same sensitive but blunt manner. In 1988, he designed three plates featuring this striking flower image, "Calla Lilly, 1984" for Swid Powell.Copyright © Robert MapplethorpeThis plate is in the Decorative Arts Collection of the Brooklyn Museum, New York, NY. The plate was also included in the museum exhibition, 'The Architect’s Table: Swid Powell and Postmodern Design', at the Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT (2007 - 2008).Artful and unique, this porcelain plate features an overglazed transfer-printed image of a flower by photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. This eye-catching porcelain photo plate brings instant sophistication to any space. Mapplethorpe's compelling images of flowers, considered among his greatest achievements, focus primarily on isolated blooms or sparse arrangements. Swid Powell was founded in 1982 by Nan Swid and Addie Powell. The company produced innovative housewares designed by the foremost architects of the time, including Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Stephen Holl, Richard Meier, Robert A. M. Stern, Stanley Tigerman, and Robert Venturi, among others. Its blend of architecture, fashion, and decorative arts made it arguably the most important American design undertaking of the 1980s. ROBERT MAPPLETHORPE' was recently on view at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (2016/2017). This major retrospective featured close to 300 works by the American artist, including masterful compositions and subjects that have given rise to new reflections on questions of gender, race and sexuality. Previously the exhibition was at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and the J. Paul Getty Museum, both in Los Angeles, CA. The exhibition will continue its tour to Sydney, Australia.
