Description: JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH by ROALD DAHL 1961 FIRST EDITION 2ND PRINTING This was DAHL'S first classic book for children. Still to come were CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, MATILDA, THE BFG and FANTASTIC MR. FOX. DAHL'S children's books simply soared with magical imagination and grasped children on levels still undiscovered by many writers of children's books. JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH might be his children's novel with the most outlandish plot. To sum up: James's parents are eaten by an escaped rhinoceros, he is given magic crystals, a house-size peach grows from a nearby tree, James tunnels into the peach and befriends a menagerie of anthropomorphic insects, the peach rolls away and crushes James's cruel aunts, then rolls into the sea where James and his friends survive many dangerous escapades. The peach is eventually lifted skyward and floated to New York City where it lands atop the Empire State Building. After explaining his peculiar situation to the authorities, James, unlike many New Yorkers, finds a job in the City. The amazing fact is that children don't really find this plot outlandish at all. For them, it's just the enviable life of one lucky little boy. Oh, to be twelve again. This copy of the classic book is in very good condition. The red cloth boards show some shelfwear, but are basically clean and the front cover bears the blind stamp wreath encircling the head of James. Gilt lettering on the spine is unscathed. Spine is very slightly cocked. Endpapers are dark green and immaculate. All pages are intact, free from markings and clean throughout. Front pastedown bears the bookplate of previous owner. Dust jacket is also completely intact with two 1" closed tears at head of spine (with 1/4" paper loss) and one similar at tail. Two of the tears have been repaired with transparent tape. Corners of DJ are slightly scuffed as are top edges. Inside of jacket is somewhat tanned from typical aging. DJ price ($3.95) is unclipped. Four-line colophon on last page bears the "Bound by the Book Press" line ascribed to the second printing. Illustrations by Nancy Ekholm Burkert bring joy to the beholder.
