Description: For those that follow my work, you know that Edwards is one of my favorite makers to restore for their world class briar. This EDWARDS 727 “0” stamped & is a handsome unique shape of superior quality. As a humble pipe restorer, I encounter so many pipes of different eras and various brands. I have come to truly appreciate & value the Edwards pipe above so many others both vintage and modern!! World class pipe makers from the 1960s, the original EDWARDS pipes were made in St. Claude, France and they were the premiere pipe makers in Europe and the world market at the time. Sometime in the late 60s or early 70s they moved the entire enterprise to Tampa, FL. They made all of their pipes (and still do) from the finest in Algerian Briar that they exclusively sourced from political contacts in Algeria. Eventually they purchased that briar company and had a monopoly on the finest 100-300 year old ancient Algerian briars available anywhere!! Their pipes are oil cured and naturally finished. These pipes remain amazing in design and material to this day. A pleasure for me to restore, please take a look at and consider these superior pipes. Classic regal designs matched with briar that simply can no longer be found. I offer Edward’s pipes regularly, as I finish them, but I don’t rush. Each of these classics deserves a complete restoration. As my hobby & passion, I have no timeline and would rather strive for excellence over throughput. For those that are initiated, these handsome pipes will always remain some of the finest ever made and I offer these fully restored works of superior craftsmanship for your enjoyment and generations to come. This vintage pipe is made from one of the most superior aged & ancient Algerian briars ever available. A magnificent straight grain dense ancient wood that is simply no longer sourced. A masterful unique shape, call it a Prince with a mitre aft? Maybe an Author that ate a Tomato? Nonetheless, an excellent stout design with a robust bowl a fine ebonite stem. Edwards set a standard that many other makers just can’t compare. The briar on this pipe is so dense, it shined just with fine sanding prior to any polish! From the 60s or 70s, you may see an equivalent pipe out there, but this EDWARDS is truly top line in quality. Now fully restored, sanitized and hand polished with my wax proprietary blend, this pipe is ready for a new owner! The bowl has been polished and coated with MC Bauman Uncle Matt’s Bowl black to start that new cake perfectly while protecting the briar from burns to several thousand degrees. The draft hole is perfectly centered and the stummel vent is wide and clean. The ebonite stem is top quality original ebonite (vulcanite). The mortise and tenon are well joined. While a rarer estate find, my cost of acquisition was significant on this classic gem. It was well worth the time & coin spent on this handsome pipe. Admittedly not for the average pipe aficionado, this for someone that truly appreciates maximizing design elements from several styles to make a superior smoking pipe. Pipes like this do not come along often, so If you collect and enjoy smoking the finest briar pipes, this can be yours. Please feel free to connect with me for questions prior to your purchase. I offer custom restorations and stem repair as a priority to select clients also, contact me for details.••• A little bit about my process for those interested. First, many “restored” pipes that I examine are just buffed up with wax on a buffing wheel. When I use the term ‘restored,’ I mean carefully examined & inspected prior to starting. I have even begun using a fiber optic video system that I call ‘Bowloscopy’ for a detailed exam of the bowl interior! The briar is often taken down by serially hand sanding and polishing. Any repairs, I fully disclose. In fact, I use NO power tools for pipe restoration. It is all handwork. Importantly, I NEVER use beeswax on any pipe!! Beeswax discolors starting at 145°F and I shudder to think how much rim char is out there from scalded beeswax! My pipes are finished with 100% natural oils, gums and waxes in proprietary blends that I have developed over the years to both use and sell. There are no synthetic solvents, finishes or varnishes ever used. Absolutely NO mineral or ‘obsidian’ oil is ever used on my pipes. Olive oil is popular, but that’s goes rancid quickly! I use the term ‘Refreshed’ for near mint condition pipes that require no restoration, but are thoroughly cleaned, sanitized, polished and protected that are like new condition ready for use. I take great care in cleaning and sanitizing the pipes that I personally restore & refresh, so they are ready for use in a safe/clean state. While I do strive to preserve the bowl cake, only if it is of high quality. I regularly use MC Bauman Uncle Matt’s Bowl Black to protect and preserve the interior bowl and to start you off on a nice new cake. Not only is the cake integral to the quality of the vintage pipe, but I trim, polish and sanitize it very carefully. Bowloscopy has been very helpful in this regard. The entire stummel is refurbished and cleaned. The draft hole and smoke column are optimized and sanitized for as perfect a ‘draw,’ as I am able to achieve. While I occasionally will disclose and provide a replacement stem, otherwise I serially sand and polish the stems by hand for look and function. Not all tooth marks/damage are removable/reparable on ebonite stems, though maximum effort is made to improving every stem while preserving structural and functional features. I strive to preserve original stamping, but at times this is not possible or simply absent. The button is always ‘tuned,’ reshaped and/or polished, the slot and stem column are reamed/polished to maximize the air flow and optimize the draw. This button area is mission critical in both pipe making and restoration as this is our mouth contact with the pipe! That final laminar and splay of smoke that flows onto the palate makes all the difference in a well crafted button. A word of caution: There is a lot of nonsense in cyberspace about pipe products and chemicals used! Foremost is ozone! As an O3 gas, it only deodorizes the surface! Ozone does not solve the problem in a malodorous or ghosted pipe (like spraying perfume on roadkill). I use 190 Proof grain alcohol and a UVC 253nm light sterilization cabinet to sanitize every pipe and remove/solve any odor problems in my pipes! Actually all of the pipes that I restore are sterilized to surgical instrument standards, but while handled cleanly, my pipes are not wrapped sterilely, so sanitized for your safety is my standard. As a physician, I use only the highest quality, food grade, natural products and well understand how they work chemically and practically in safe and durable pipe restoration work in each pipe compartment. Pipe restoration and carving are some of my favorite pastimes and you can be assured that I have spent at least 4-6 hours in actual handwork over several days on every pipe restoration. My passion for excellence in preservation of master pipe makers works is most important to me, not whether the pipe sells or not. I do research each and every pipe that I choose to restore! History is important to me and I always strive to embody the creator of these masterpieces in my restorations. Your purchase and trust is much appreciated. This allows me to partially support my obsession and craft. I do not do this work for the money, I simply love restoring vintage pipes and creating pipes that are top smokers. I am happy to do a limited number of custom restorations at reasonable costs for friends and clients. My friends & I have revolutionized vulcanite stem restoration and are always up for new challenges, at full durability! If you are in need of a detailed restoration for a favorite pipe and like my work, please contact me. I thank you for reading!
