With our Option 2 modifications, we correct deficiencies and replace components, but we retain much of Carver's original circuits and design. We spend a great deal of time on our amps, and we do not sell them until we are happy with their performance. This is our Option 2 and best performing Phase Linear amp we have listed on eBay to date. All work performed by the techs at MC Mobile. NOTES: Service includes these modifications to improve performance in this Option 2 amplifier: 1. Changed drive board and back plane grounding to lower THD which corrects PL's poor grounding technique. 2. Checked DC offset for both channels after all mods were completed < 19 mV both channels (spec. is < 50 mV) 3. Added custom designed speaker isolation and DC protect PCB which eliminates turn on & off thump and protects speakers 4. Set pre-driver idle current to maximum factory specification 5. Cleaned and re-zeroed meters 6. Replaced defective components as required. Amp is a complete lytic recap. 7. Modified feedback to enhance bass response -- this is in conjunction with number 8 below 8. Upgraded power supply including replacing the super small stock power supply capacitors (5900 uF) with very large 20,000 uF higher voltage capacitors-- see Note below 9. Upgraded with new fuses to Series II values (must use larger Series II values with upgrades) 10. Performed current matching at high current levels on all outputs to insure that they are within the specification which is less than 20% of the median value per bank 11. Replaced output transistors to obtain a carefully matched set of 6 per channel with worse case bank matching of 13.6 % at the extremes 12. Added custom inrush limiter board to limit inrush current to the much larger PS caps, so the amp soft starts 13. Installed custom LED illumination board with white LEDs for front meter illumination (see pictures) 14. Modified left meter to accommodate larger PS caps to minimize front panel to top & bottom panel gaps 15. Added bypass capacitors to the Power Supply to reduce noise 16. Replaced front panel mounting bolts with new 17. Remounted all new output transistors (FPL909s) and pre-driver transistors with Mica and thermal grease which provides 4X better thermal transfer than Sil pads 18, Corrected typical PL amp amplification asymmetry to achieve 46 V RMS output per channel into 8 Ohms at 1 Khz driven one channel at a time. Typical output is 42 V RMS, so the 46 V RMS nets slightly more than 264 W RMS per channel for this amp which has a particularly good transformer with extra current capability. Dynamic power with the new capacitors is well in excess of the 264 W RMS continuous power 19. Added stabilization elements to pre-pre-driver stage to prevent oscillation 20. Replaced every transistor in the right channel for this rebuild, so left and right channel end to end gain is slightly different due to the complete right channel rebuild 21. Replaced broken right channel positive speaker post with new (new style is a bit different-- see our pictures) Note: We have introduced a quiet ground scheme into this amp separate from noisy ground. Input signal return is no longer at the same potential as the output speaker posts and amp case as was the grounding scheme from the factory. This modification lowers noise, and, therefore, helps THD + N. Thus, care must be taken in any multi-amp, multi-preamp or external case grounding system not to tie the input return to the case or the return (ground) speaker posts. Damage to the amplifier will occur if input return isolation is violated. The input signal return (ground) is supplied by the pre-amp element of the system. If there are any questions about this, please ask before this amplifier is energized in a system. Note: The power supply upgrade makes a noticeable difference in the performance of this amplifier. The original power supply capacitors are too small for good performance for a 210 W per channel amplifier. The power supply upgrade increases the headroom and improves bass performance of this amp. PL amp designs contain only one secondary voltage for amplifier operation, and, otherwise, simple regulation in the amplifier circuits. Therefore, stabilization of the rail voltages is critical for better performance, and improved power output (see power measurements below). The PS cap upgrade reduced power supply ripple more than 6X, from 66 mV per rail to less than 10 mV per rail, which lowers noise & helps stabilize rail voltages. Note: Inrush limiter and Speaker protection have been added, per above. Initial delay in the speaker protect circuit is about 12 seconds. Note: We recommend fan cooling the rear heat sinks if driving this amp at sustained high power and/or when driving less than 8 Ohm speakers. The SOA of the output stage on all PL 400 amps is very marginal when driving 4 Ohm loads. If high power is required for 4 Ohm loads, please inquire about our Option 4 upgrades that incorporate a fully complimentary end to end design including a fully complimentary series parallel output stage. Our Option 4 amps also feature cascode technology, current mirrors, current sources, speaker protection, inrush protection, LED lighting, optional auto-on circuit, and an adjustable meter acceleration circuit for series 1 amps. it is a uniquely revolutionary upgrade in a vintage Phase Linear amplifier cabinet with superb, recording studio level, sound quality.
