His reminiscences of the war survived through a stoke of good fortune. While telling his family of his Civil experiences, one of his daughters, Arretta Lynch Watts, wrote down his comments. Arretta was a reporter by profession, having received a Master Degree in journalism from Columbia University, and she recognized the significance of her father’s comments. The Reminiscences as they were originally recorded comprise the first section of this booklet. The only changes to the original document are for spelling corrections. In the second section, the Reminiscences are re-arranged into chronological order and include biographical and explanatory comments. Anslum Watt’s remembrances of his Civil War days were made in 1923, when he was 78 years of age.
