The purpose of the leaf springs is to help unlock the jaws when pressure on the handle of the wrench is released. The tool was refurbished by disassembling the hook jaw and going over the pieces with wire brush attachments on an electric drill to remove rust. There is still some rust on the tool in areas I couldn't reach as well as pitting from rust and dents and scratches from use. With the threads of the hook jaw and the inside of the knurled knob cleaned out, the knob turns quickly and easily for opening and closing the jaws. Potential buyers of this item might be either someone who wants a functional pipe wrench or someone who collects vintage and antique tools.
