Description: Rare Vintage Copley Plaza Hotel “Book of Information & Shopping List”: ca. 1914. When the Copley Plaza Hotel opened in 1912, the Boston social elites rushed in to party and be seen. Boston Mayor “Honey Fritz” Fitzgerald, JFK’s grandfather, celebrated with about 1000 at the hotel's opening reception. Everyone wanted to see the wonderful things that architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh had designed. It was the “finest and most luxurious hotel in New England,” screamed an ad. The Copley Plaza Hotel was the “cultural hub” of Boston’s social elite. Is it any wonder that every president of the 20th century from William Howard Taft came to stay at the Plaza? All the finest appointments were overseen by managing director Edward C. Fogg, who had been brought in from New York City to see that the $4 million hotel was run up to the best standards of the day. This 104-page booklet was probably one of the first publicity pieces that Fogg offered his elite clientele. The booklet is chockful of information and pictures of and about the hotel, advertising for the most exclusive shops, hotels and entertainment venues inthe city and information about what to see and do in the city. It truly was a “bookof information and shopping list.” It’s single color – brown on a high quality, non-glossy cream paper stock. It has a separate cover with a hand tipped picture of the posh hotel on the cover. It’s over 100 years old and is in surprisingly good condition. No rips tears or writing inside. The binding – a gold, braided rope – is as strong as the day it was issued. The inside pages are perfect (although there is an inaccuracy on the title page. The title page says the hotel was established in 1911, although it was not opened until August of the next year. The booklet measures about 8 x 5 in. Front cover has some dirt and the hand-tipped illustration is beginning to peel up. Please see the pictures. The booklet is from Akron, Ohio, from one of those grand old homes from the old wealthy in the city. It’s a rare piece for the true connoisseur of cultural elite of the early 1900s.
