Description: Up for sale is a Very Rare, One-of-a-kind sculpture by Montana artist Ben Sams. From what I can gather, this piece is from his earlier work in Montana during the late 60's early 70's during the height of social unrest and the Viet-Nam war. His website shows a collection of Social Commentary pieces he did to spread humor about the tragedies of war and environmental issues. I am guessing he left this figure without a left arm for this reason. If you are interested in this piece, then I probably do not have to go into detail about how people have said he is the most important ceramic sculptor of his time. His work speaks for itself. This sculptor stands over 24" Tall and is just under 9" at the widest point. It weighs in at a remarkable 17 pounds 10 ounces and has three sections to the entire figure. The lower body, the mid-section and arm and the head. All three sit very stable together with it's weight.I see a few issues with this 50 year old figure. One is there appears to be a small piece missing from the base in the side front. (because of the crudeness of this piece, it is not very noticeable.)Another problem I see is the neck area in the back looks to have been repaired. Luckily the head covers almost all of this. There may have been a crack fixed in the back lower section as seen in the photo. I am not sure if this is a repair or part of the design.Overall, this is the most impressive and important Studio Sculpture I have ever seen or owned.Unfortunately, Ben died suddenly from a heart attack while walking on his favorite beach with his wife and dog in 2002Here are a few reviews by his peers around this time.Ben Sam ". . . SAMS is perhaps the foremost ceramic sculptor in the country today." "Its wild, its weird, its wonderful . . . it’s a trip." (Review)"A near sell out on a first show is almost unheard of." (Review)"It is predicted that Sams will be one of the decade's outstanding young artists in his field." (Review)"Ben Sams is master - he's the best ceramic sculptor in the world since Picasso," says Ms. Chase emphatically." (Review)"Sams has mastered his art to the point that the viewer can almost forget the virtuosity of his work and see only its fantastic result." (Review)"To call the work of nearly any other sculptor "outrageous" would be either slang or hyperbole. Applied to Sams' pieces it is accurate." (Review)"You won't be able to take your eyes off the work of Ben Sams, nor will his works be able to take their eyes off you." (Review)"The world of Ben Sams, regardless of it ties to other ceramic and sculptural conventions, is something very singular." (Review)"Ben has had a strong influence in revitalizing the field of ceramics as a valid art form . . . he has developed a unique ceramic art form and a totally individualistic style." (Review)
